Shimla: The well-being of our children is a top priority. Every child deserves to feel safe and protected, and it is essential to educate them about their rights and personal boundaries. To address this, Kalpana Sharma an educator, currently working at Rajghat Besant School, Krishnamurti Foundation of India, conducted two sessions for students of DAV Shoghi. The first session was on Safe touch for grade 2 to 6 and the second session was on media literacy for grades 7 to 10. Principal, Lakvir Singh along with his team of teachers and students actively participated in both the sessions.

During the session, Kalpana, discussed the importance of understanding private parts and emphasized the need to avoid unwanted physical contact. Scenarios were enacted by teachers helping children understand how to deal situations on a daily basis.

Additionally, the session provided guidance on how to respond to an unsafe touch by assertively saying “No” and promptly informing a trusted adult.

During social Media literacy session it was emphasised that safety is extremely important not only in the real world but also in the virtual world. The second session helped in making children aware about how unsafe the virtual world can be if one is not vigilant. Dos and Don’ts about  the usage of social media were discussed at length where students were made aware about cyber crime, hacking, digital foot print, phishing, stalking etc.

Overall both the session successfully conveyed crucial information in a manner that was accessible and well-received by the young participants.

The principal, Lakvir Singh thanked Kalpana Sharma for anchoring these sessions and requested the teachers to continue to work on these themes with the children. These sessions are being offered free by Kalpana Sharma as a tribute to Late Usha Sharma, an eminent Educator of Shimla. She was the founder of BSN School Shimla.
