A concern has emerged in Shimla after seven children tested positive for Hepatitis A at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Zonal Hospital (DDUZH). The development has prompted the Health Department to intensify surveillance and strengthen preventive measures across the district.

Officials stated that a gradual increase in Viral Hepatitis cases among children has been recorded during May. In total, 11 children showing symptoms of Viral Hepatitis were admitted to the pediatric ward, out of which seven were confirmed to be Hepatitis A positive. Several others with mild symptoms were treated on an outpatient basis.

Chief Medical Officer Shimla, Dr. Yashpal Ranta, said the cases have been reported sporadically over the past month, with nearly one case emerging on a daily or alternate-day basis. He added that no specific locality-based clustering has been identified, as the affected children belong to different parts of the district.

Dr. Ranta further said that the situation is under close observation and precautionary public health measures have already been activated. Health teams have been deployed in affected and surrounding areas to conduct active surveillance, monitor sanitation conditions, assess drinking water safety, and spread awareness about preventive practices. The department is also working in coordination with concerned agencies to ensure safe drinking water supply and improved sanitation in vulnerable regions.

Officials highlighted that Hepatitis A and E infections primarily spread through contaminated food or water and poor hygiene practices. Citizens have been advised to consume boiled or safe drinking water, maintain hand hygiene, avoid uncovered food items, and ensure cleanliness in their surroundings.

The Health Department has urged people to seek immediate medical attention in case of symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, or dark urine. Authorities assured that all necessary containment and preventive measures are being implemented while continuous monitoring of the situation remains in place.
