Governor Kavinder Gupta today presided over the 2nd Convocation of Sardar Patel University (SPU), Mandi, and urged graduating students to move beyond personal ambitions and contribute to the larger mission of building a strong, self-reliant and developed India under the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’.

Addressing the convocation held in the historic town of Mandi—popularly known as ‘Choti Kashi’—the Governor said the ceremony was not merely about awarding degrees but a celebration of knowledge, culture, and responsibility.

Paying tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India and the inspiration behind the university’s name, he emphasized that the ideals of national unity and integrity remain as relevant today as they were at the time of Independence. He also appreciated the university for installing Patel’s statue on campus, calling it a symbol of national vision and respect.

The Governor encouraged students to uphold the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ and remain committed to strengthening national unity and pride.

He lauded SPU Mandi for its steady progress since its establishment, particularly its implementation of the National Education Policy, creation of a Bharatiya Gyan Parampara Cell, adoption of traditional attire for its first convocation, and formation of academic committees. He also praised the university’s cultural and academic initiatives marking the 500-year heritage of Mandi.

Highlighting the role of youth in nation-building, the Governor said India’s growth journey through initiatives like Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Digital India, and Viksit Bharat 2047 requires active participation from young minds. He stressed that modern education must go beyond knowledge to include innovation, ethics, and compassion.

He urged students to serve society, support weaker sections, adopt a drug-free lifestyle, protect the environment, and preserve India’s cultural heritage.

Describing graduation as both an “end of formal education” and the “beginning of a new journey,” he reminded students that learning is a lifelong process.

The Governor also congratulated medal winners, graduates, their families, and teachers, acknowledging the vital role of mentorship and parental support in student success. He expressed confidence that SPU Mandi will emerge as a leading centre of higher education in Himachal Pradesh and beyond.

During the ceremony, 575 students were awarded degrees across various disciplines, while 40 meritorious students received gold medals for academic excellence.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Lalit Kumar Awasthi highlighted the university’s achievements since its establishment in 2022, including research projects worth ₹2.30 crore, over 60 research publications, approval of two patents, and 22 MoUs with national and international institutions.
