Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu conducted a review of the Rs. 145 crore utility duct project currently underway in Shimla. The project, which covers a 7 km stretch from Chotta Shimla to Willies Park, aims to shift overhead utility cables underground, improving the city’s infrastructure and aesthetics.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for timely completion and instructed Public Works Department (PWD) officials to expedite the remaining work. He noted that construction from Chotta Shimla to Oak Over is nearly finished and should be completed within 15 days. He also called for the immediate tarring of roads and installation of streetlights to restore normalcy and enhance the area’s appearance.
Highlighting Shimla’s status as both the capital and a prominent tourist destination, CM Sukhu said the project would significantly improve the visitor experience by removing visual clutter caused by overhead cables. “This initiative is part of our broader efforts to attract more tourists and preserve the city’s charm,” he stated.
The comprehensive utility duct network will include stretches from Chotta Shimla to Willies Park, Secretariat via Raj Bhavan to Oak Over, and from Sher-e-Punjab through Lower Bazaar up to CTO. These ducts are designed to house underground electrical, water, and other service lines.
