Swaran Public School recently launched its Safety Week with a thought-provoking session led by Kalpana Sharma, a respected educator and former Principal of BSN Shimla, currently affiliated with the Krishnamurti Foundation of India at Rajghat Besant School. Addressing senior students of Grades 9 and 10, Sharma sensitized them to vital concepts such as safe and unsafe touch, the importance of safe spaces, and the role of the national child helpline number 1098. Through interactive role-plays, students learned to assertively say ‘No’ in uncomfortable situations, strengthening their personal boundaries and understanding how to seek help effectively.

The session also explored adolescence, guiding students through the physical and emotional changes of puberty. With emphasis on body positivity, emotional awareness, and mutual respect, Sharma introduced informative resources like Menstrupedia and Gullu, helping students navigate developmental changes. The co-educational format encouraged open, respectful dialogue among boys and girls, fostering an inclusive and safe learning environment.
Building on this, the Student Council of Grades 9 and 10 collaborated with Sharma to design a peer-led outreach program. Over the coming week, council members will conduct age-appropriate educational sessions for junior students from Grades 1 to 8 and engage with parents and residents of the Tutikandi area to raise community awareness.
Principal Seema Mehta expressed deep gratitude to Kalpana Sharma for her insightful guidance and praised the student council and faculty for their commitment to promoting safety, empathy, and empowerment beyond the school. Kalpana Sharma continues to deliver these impactful sessions across Shimla as a heartfelt tribute to the late Usha Sharma, the visionary founder of BSN Shimla.
