In a major boost to India’s medical technology sector, the Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has extended financial support to S3V Vascular Technologies Ltd., Mysuru for the development of India’s first indigenously manufactured mechanical thrombectomy kit for stroke treatment.

The project will establish a cutting-edge manufacturing facility at the Medical Devices Park in Oragadam, Chennai. This facility will produce a complete suite of neuro-intervention devices—including microcatheters, aspiration catheters, stent retrievers, and guidewires—used in treating acute ischemic stroke, a leading cause of death and disability.

Unlike conventional thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy offers faster and more effective recovery, often making the difference between paralysis and recovery. By producing these devices locally, the initiative aims to reduce India’s reliance on expensive imports and improve affordability and accessibility of stroke care across the country.

TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak praised the project as a significant step toward building India’s first comprehensive neuro-intervention manufacturing ecosystem and strengthening healthcare access through schemes like Ayushman Bharat.

Dr. N.G. Vijaya Gopal, Managing Director of S3V, emphasized that the company has initiated CE and USFDA approvals and aims to take these “Made in India” devices to global markets across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the U.S.

This initiative is also expected to support training of young doctors in Tier-II cities using simulator-based programs, further enhancing stroke care delivery in underserved areas.
