World Coconut Day is observed annually on September 2 to highlight the agricultural, economic, and health significance of the coconut palm, widely revered as the “Kalpavriksha” or “Tree of Life” because every part of the plant serves a distinct purpose. Established in 2009 by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community—now the International Coconut Community under UN-ESCAP—the date marks the founding of the organization and aims to raise awareness about sustainable farming and value-added industries. Major producing nations, including India, Indonesia, and the Philippines, use the day to support millions of smallholder farmers whose livelihoods depend on the crop, while promoting coconut products ranging from nutrient-rich coconut water and oil to eco-friendly coir fiber and activated carbon.
