National Handloom Day is celebrated annually in India on August 7 to honor the nation’s vibrant handloom weaving community and highlight its crucial role in preserving cultural heritage and driving socio-economic growth. The date was specifically chosen to commemorate the historic Swadeshi Movement, which was formally launched on August 7, 1905, at the Calcutta Town Hall to promote indigenous goods and self-reliance during the freedom struggle. Officially inaugurated by the Government of India in 2015, the observance aims to empower weavers—a significant portion of whom are women—by boosting their economic standing, promoting eco-friendly and sustainable textiles, and safeguarding iconic regional art forms like Banarasi, Kanjeevaram, and Ikat through national awards, expos, and awareness drives.
