TPDS Wheat Fortification Workshop Convenes in State

The Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA), in collaboration with Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), successfully organized a state-level workshop on strengthening wheat flour fortification under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS).

R. D. Nazeem, Additional Chief Secretary, in his keynote address, emphasized the government’s commitment to nutritional security through fortification programs. He highlighted the need for institutional strengthening, inter-departmental coordination, and sustained technical support for effective implementation. Nazeem also launched a comprehensive policy document on wheat flour fortification to guide future strategies in the state.

Director FCS&CA, Ram Kumar Gautam, reiterated the state’s commitment to providing quality-assured fortified wheat flour under TPDS, stressing its role in improving nutrition for vulnerable populations.

The workshop featured technical sessions led by Suresh Sakhare, Senior Principal Scientist from the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), covering innovations, technical aspects, and best practices in wheat flour fortification. Priya Bhattacharya from GAIN and Mihika Wakhloo from KHPT presented key findings from the process document, highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement and endorsement processes for successful program implementation.

District-level officials, mill operators, and other stakeholders actively participated, sharing experiences, challenges, and suggestions to further improve fortification initiatives across the state.
