Residents of the Mashobra-Dhalli bypass area in Shimla expressed panic after distinct structural cracks appeared across several residential houses, allegedly linked to ongoing tunneling activities by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Taking immediate cognizance of the situation, the local administration directed NHAI authorities to halt all excavation and construction work on the bypass tunnel until safety measures and structural assessments are completed.
Affected residents reported that blasting and heavy drilling operations beneath the residential belt caused severe vibrations, leading to visible damage to house walls and foundations. Teams from the municipal corporation and district administration conducted an inspection of the impacted properties to evaluate the extent of the damage, ensure resident safety, and determine necessary compensation or relief measures.
Local representatives have urged the highway authority to conduct a technical study and stabilize the hillside before resuming any construction, emphasizing that public safety and property protection must take priority over infrastructure timelines.
