Vandana Bhagra, Shimla

Nestled amidst the misty hills and monsoon whispers of Shimla, a treasure trove awaits book lovers at the Shimla Book Fair, organized by Yashika Enterprises, Delhi, being held at the iconic Gaiety Theatre, from June 25 to July 6. With over 7 lakh books on display, this literary extravaganza is a haven for readers of all ages, tastes, and interests. From gripping fiction and non-fiction, to colourful children’s tales, manga, encyclopaedias, and academic texts, the fair showcases a breathtaking selection that’s both wide and wonderfully curated. You will find childhood series like Hardy Boys, Geronimo Stilton, and Nancy Drew, as well as timeless Indian treasures like Amar Chitra Katha, Hindi novels and classic Indian literature.

Whether you’re looking for a weekend escape into a fantasy world, an inspiring biography, a thought-provoking political piece, or simply an educational resource for a young learner, the Shimla Book Fair promises to offer something fresh, exciting, and unexpectedly delightful.

What sets this fair apart isn’t just the volume of books, but the variety. Many of the titles on offer are new releases or lesser-known gems, giving visitors a sense of novelty and discovery as they browse. “We’re offering books you won’t easily find elsewhere. Our aim is to give readers access to titles that are fresh, diverse, and thought-provoking,” said Karan Nayyar, the organiser behind this independent initiative.

This year marks a special departure from traditional large-scale exhibitions. While the team has previously participated in national-level fairs, this time they’ve chosen to bring their collection to Shimla on a more personal, individual level. “It’s a new experiment,” Karan shares. “The rains may have slowed footfall initially, but the smiles of satisfied customers make it worthwhile.”

Apart from books, the fair features a delightful range of stationery, bookmarks, and knick-knacks that will charm kids and adults alike. It’s not just a sale; it’s an experience—a sensory journey through the textures, colours, and stories waiting to be discovered.

And it’s a book lover’s paradise when it comes to prices too. With novels starting at just ₹50 and up to 70% discounts on selected titles and box sets, it’s hard to leave without a bag full of books. Whether you’re buying for personal pleasure, academic need, or gifting purposes, it’s the perfect chance to stock up.

Karan admits there have been challenges—especially with increased rental costs and transport logistics—but he remains optimistic. “We’re hoping for a good turnout over the weekend. Shimla’s readers have always been passionate, and we’re excited to be part of that spirit.”

In an era where screens often steal attention, events like the Shimla Book Fair remind us of the irreplaceable magic of a book—of flipping pages, breathing in paper-scented air, and getting lost in a world where the only limit is imagination.

So if you’re in Shimla this week, step into the Gaiety Theatre, pick up a book, and rediscover the quiet joy of reading.
