The serene hills of Shimla are once again alive with intellectual fervour as Bishop Cotton School prepares to host the prestigious 29th Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial English Debates. The campus is abuzz with excitement and anticipation, welcoming some of the finest young minds from across the country.

First held in 1996, the Slater Debates are named in honour of Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater, the first Principal of the school, who led the institution from 1863 to 1885. Over nearly three decades, this distinguished platform has grown into one of India’s most respected inter-school debating events, known for its high standards of oratory, critical thinking, and camaraderie.

This year’s edition proudly hosts an impressive lineup of participating institutions, including The Assam Valley School, Mallinson Girls’ School, Tyndale Biscoe School, Yadavindra Public School, Auckland House School, St. Thomas’ School, La Martiniere Girls’ College, Vivek High School, Loreto Convent, Sherwood College, The Lawrence School, Wynberg Allen School, and St. Luke’s Senior Secondary School. In addition to these esteemed institutions, several local schools, including Auckland House School, St. Thomas’ School, and Tara Hall School, will also be participating, adding to the competitive spirit and diversity of perspectives.

Over the next five days, participants will engage in approximately 30 debates covering a wide spectrum of contemporary and thought-provoking topics. Beyond the competition, the event promises a vibrant exchange of ideas, cultures, and experiences. It offers students a unique opportunity not only to showcase their intellectual prowess but also to forge friendships and connections that may last a lifetime. The interaction between local and visiting schools will be particularly engaging, as it brings together varied viewpoints and debating styles. Complementing the debates, a series of thoughtfully curated activities and events have been planned to ensure a holistic and memorable experience for all guests.

As hosts, Bishop Cotton School takes immense pride in continuing this rich legacy and upholding the spirit of excellence that defines the Slater Debates. The school extends its warmest welcome to all participants and wishes them the very best. It is hoped that their time in Shimla will not only be intellectually enriching but also filled with cherished memories.
