The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) reviewing the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024—central to the ‘One Nation-One Election’ proposal—met with Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhu and Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri in Shimla today.
Chaired by P.P. Choudhary, the Committee was accorded a traditional welcome by the state leadership, with members being honoured with Himachali caps and shawls. The meeting included extensive discussions on the feasibility and implications of synchronizing elections across the country.
CM Sukhu reiterated the Congress Party’s opposition to the Bill but emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue. He noted that while the party does not support the proposal in its current form, the state government has offered suggestions aimed at reinforcing democratic principles—including a provision for annual by-elections to ensure continuous representation and accountability.
Hamirpur MP and Committee member Anurag Thakur was also present during the deliberations.
