In a significant success for disaster preparedness, the Larji Hydropower Project has been safeguarded from flood threats this monsoon season, thanks to timely preventive actions taken by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) under the guidance of CM Sukhu.

Learning from the devastating floods of 2023, which led to a six-month shutdown and over ₹280 crore in losses and repairs, the state government and HPSEBL executed a comprehensive safety plan well ahead of time. A major part of the initiative was the installation of flood gates, which played a critical role in protecting the 126 MW project during the Beas River flood on August 26, 2025.

The powerhouse remained fully operational, and even as silt deposits formed during the flood, water that seeped in was immediately drained, ensuring uninterrupted functioning of the facility. Security was further enhanced by the creation of dedicated field and technical posts under the rationalization of the Generation Wing in February 2025, which allowed for better on-site execution of emergency protocols.

Sukhu expressed satisfaction over the preventive strategies and praised the management, engineers, and staff for their coordinated efforts in protecting the project. He directed that the special safety plan be continued and further strengthened in view of future challenges posed by changing climate patterns.

This successful intervention not only ensured uninterrupted power generation but also showcased the government’s proactive and lessons-learned approach toward disaster resilience in critical infrastructure.
