Recognizing the growing importance of emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Himachal Pradesh Government has launched new opportunities for youth by integrating these fields into the Diploma in Computer Science Engineering curriculum.

Under the guidance of CM Sukhu, the Department of Technical Education has introduced a joint course — Diploma in Computer Science Engineering and IoT — in select government polytechnic colleges across the state.

A government spokesperson informed that Government Polytechnic College, Hamirpur (Baduhi), one of the oldest and most reputed technical institutes in the state, has started this course with an intake of 51 students from the previous academic session. The course has already been launched in Government Polytechnic College, Rohru, providing students exposure to both core computer science concepts and emerging technologies.

Students, including Artha, Srishti Chauhan, and Aryan Chopra, expressed that the new programme has opened exciting opportunities in modern technological fields while allowing local students to pursue advanced courses close to home. They noted that IoT and AI are rapidly evolving domains offering vast potential for innovation and employment.

To strengthen the innovation ecosystem, the government is establishing a dedicated innovation fund of ₹2 crore to support young innovators in transforming their ideas into viable projects.

In line with this forward-looking vision, new AI and Data Science degree courses have been introduced at Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Nagrota Bagwan. Similarly, new programmes in Civil Engineering at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Engineering and Technology, Pragatinagar (Shimla) and AI & Machine Learning Diploma at Government Polytechnic, Sundernagar (Mandi) have also been approved. Necessary teaching staff will be appointed soon to ensure smooth implementation.

These initiatives reflect the State Government’s focus on technology-integrated learning and future-ready education. Under the reform framework of Vyastha Parivartan, emphasis is being laid on strengthening institutional capacity, modernizing curricula, forging industry linkages, and enhancing employability and entrepreneurship among the youth.

The integration of IoT and AI into technical education marks a major step toward preparing students for the evolving digital economy and building a skilled, innovation-driven workforce.
