Himachal Boosts School Reforms and Digital Learning

Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Rohit Thakur today chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials to review the functioning of the Education Department and accelerate reforms aimed at improving the quality of education in the state. Emphasizing the government’s commitment to modern, accessible, and high-standard education, he directed measures to address challenges arising from school mergers, de-notifications, and rationalisation. Special attention was given to ensuring transport facilities for students in remote and tribal districts like Kinnaur, Chamba, and Lahaul-Spiti, while re-notification of schools in Nagrota and Jwalamukhi was ordered to safeguard students’ interests.

Highlighting academic reforms, the Minister noted that 151 government schools have now received CBSE affiliation, set to implement the curriculum in the upcoming academic session. He reviewed digital education initiatives, confirming that 7,635 tablets will be distributed to meritorious students by month-end to enhance learning resources. Plans to introduce Horticulture as a vocational subject were discussed under the National Council for Vocational Education and Training recognition, with phased implementation and adequate staffing.

On recruitment, officials reported that 1,427 candidates appeared for the Lecturer Direct Recruitment exam, with results expected soon. Approval has been granted to fill 870 teaching posts, especially in Science and Commerce, and the Minister urged early completion of pending appointments. Regarding infrastructure, Rs. 13.91 crore has been released under the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) for 219 schools, with 782 repair and construction works already completed; the remaining works are to be expedited.

The Minister also stressed improving higher education by finalizing college rankings on 17th March, fast-tracking the establishment of new Kendriya Vidyalayas, simplifying admission procedures, and ensuring transparent certificate issuance, aiming to make quality education more accessible and efficient for students across Himachal Pradesh.
