The Government of India is boosting scientific research, innovation, and technological development through mission-mode programmes, policy reforms, and increased R&D investments. Key focus areas include AI, quantum technologies, IoT, robotics, biotechnology, semiconductors, clean energy, space technologies, and carbon capture.

Major initiatives include the ₹1 lakh crore RDI Fund, Anusandhan National Research Foundation, National Quantum Mission, India Semiconductor Mission, and National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems. Supporting schemes such as NIDHI, BIRAC, iDEX, and TIDE 2.0 foster industry partnerships and private sector participation in R&D.

The Department of Science & Technology (DST) conducts National S&T Surveys to track R&D investment. India’s Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD) rose from ₹60,197 crore in 2010-11 to ₹1,27,381 crore in 2020-21, placing the country 7th globally.

To promote scientific temper, programmes like NCSTC, INSPIRE-MANAK, CSIR-Jigyasa 2.0, and Atal Tinkering Labs engage students, teachers, and the public through science fairs, STEMM activities, outreach campaigns, and innovation projects. Recent initiatives like ‘Samvaad’ and Science Communication Tools enhance experiential learning and public engagement.

Funding reflects sustained commitment, with NCSTC and INSPIRE-MANAK receiving ₹35–86 crore annually. This information was shared by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh in a Lok Sabha reply on 25 March 2026.
