Governor Kavinder Gupta has said that the Atal Tunnel has completely reshaped the development and tourism landscape of Lahaul-Spiti, giving the region a new identity of connectivity and opportunity in the Himalayas.
During his visit to Lahaul-Spiti and Manali on Thursday, the Governor passed through the Atal Tunnel from South Portal to North Portal and appreciated the engineering excellence achieved by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). He described it as a landmark infrastructure achievement that blends strategic importance with modern technology.
Officials of BRO briefed him on the construction process, safety mechanisms and round-the-year operational arrangements ensuring uninterrupted movement through the tunnel. The Governor praised the efficiency with which traffic and connectivity are being managed in extreme weather conditions.
He said the tunnel stands as a tribute to the vision of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and represents far more than an engineering structure—it is a symbol of national integration, border accessibility and people-centric development in remote regions.
Highlighting its impact, he noted that Lahaul-Spiti is now connected throughout the year, bringing visible improvements in healthcare access, education facilities, transportation and essential supplies. He added that tourism has witnessed a strong surge after the tunnel became operational, directly benefiting local livelihoods and strengthening the rural economy.
The Governor also visited Sissu Lake and Sissu Waterfall, describing the valley as a natural treasure of Himachal Pradesh. He said destinations like Sissu have gained global attention due to improved accessibility, turning the region into a major tourism hotspot.
At the Raja Ghepan Temple, he offered prayers and sought blessings for peace and prosperity in the state and the nation. He was received at the North Portal by Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana and senior officials.
Later, he visited the Hidimba Devi Temple in Manali, where he paid obeisance and interacted with devotees. He praised Himachal Pradesh’s deeply rooted spiritual traditions and cultural richness, calling the state a living embodiment of “Devbhoomi”.
He added that the state’s unique blend of natural beauty, faith-based traditions and cultural diversity is a national heritage that must be carefully preserved and promoted for future generations.
