NITI Aayog has released a policy report titled “School Education System in India: Temporal Analysis and Policy Roadmap for Quality Enhancement”, outlining a long-term strategy to improve quality, equity, and learning outcomes across India’s school education system.

The report, released by Vice Chairman Suman Bery and CEO Nidhi Chhibber, analyses a decade of data using UDISE+, NAS, ASER, and PARAKH surveys. It covers India’s vast network of 14.71 lakh schools and over 24.69 crore students.

It highlights major gains in infrastructure, digital learning, and inclusion, including improved sanitation, electricity, internet access, and rising enrolment of girls and SC/ST students. Learning outcomes, especially foundational literacy and numeracy, are also showing recovery post-pandemic under initiatives like NEP 2020 and NIPUN Bharat.

At the same time, the report identifies key systemic and academic gaps and proposes 13 major reforms. These include school restructuring, teacher development, governance strengthening, digital learning expansion, and AI integration in education.

It also outlines 33 implementation pathways and over 125 performance indicators to track progress, with case studies of best practices from across states and districts.
