Governor Kavinder Gupta today visited the historic Bhakra Dam in Bilaspur district, one of Asia’s largest gravity dams and a key milestone in India’s post-independence engineering development, situated on the Sutlej River.
During his visit, the Governor was briefed on the dam’s operational performance, water storage status, power generation capacity, and ongoing maintenance activities aimed at ensuring its safe and efficient functioning. Officials also highlighted its crucial role in providing irrigation and drinking water, along with hydroelectric power supply to several northern states.
The Governor conducted an on-site inspection of the dam’s internal structures, including turbines and power generation units. He reviewed the functioning of the machinery and commended the engineers and technical staff for their dedicated efforts in maintaining uninterrupted power production from this vital national asset.
Kavinder Gupta said that Bhakra Dam stands as a symbol of India’s engineering vision and nation-building spirit. He noted that the project continues to benefit millions across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh by supporting agriculture, industry, and daily water needs.
Emphasizing the need for responsible resource management, the Governor called for greater focus on water conservation and efficient utilization of natural resources in the face of global energy and environmental challenges. He also appreciated the Bhakra Management Board for its consistent efforts in operating and maintaining the project with high standards of professionalism.
