Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday announced that the state government will extend Non-Practicing Allowance (NPA) to super-speciality doctors as part of its efforts to further strengthen healthcare services in Himachal Pradesh. He made the announcement while chairing a review meeting of the Health Department.

The Chief Minister said the government remains committed to ensuring quality healthcare services within the state and emphasized that adequate financial resources are being made available for the modernization of the health sector. He noted that a series of reforms and initiatives undertaken over the past three-and-a-half years have significantly improved healthcare infrastructure and service delivery across Himachal Pradesh.

Highlighting the government’s engagement with the medical fraternity, Sukhu said several rounds of consultations have been held with doctors on healthcare reforms. He added that he would personally visit health institutions across the state in the coming months to interact with medical professionals and chart a roadmap for future improvements.

The Chief Minister stated that all government medical colleges are being upgraded with adequate manpower and state-of-the-art equipment on par with national institutions. He said the government is investing nearly ₹3,000 crore in procuring advanced medical machinery and equipment. Hospitals in districts without medical colleges are also being strengthened by upgrading facilities at zonal and regional hospitals.

To address workforce shortages, the government is carrying out recruitment drives for doctors, paramedical staff and technicians. Sukhu also highlighted the introduction of robotic surgery in the state, describing it as a major step that has enabled patients to access advanced treatment within Himachal Pradesh, reducing the need for expensive travel outside the state.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister directed the Health Department to classify Community Health Centres (CHCs) according to population coverage so that staffing and infrastructure can be aligned with local needs. He said the move would help ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services closer to people’s homes.
