CM Sukhu today inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of several development projects at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, while urging the institution to take up research in the emerging field of green hydrogen.

Sukhu inaugurated the Phase-III Multi-Faculty Building constructed at a cost of ₹10.09 crore. The building comprises three academic floors, a computer-cum-CBT laboratory, and parking facilities. He also inaugurated a newly established CBT lab, which is expected to enhance digital learning and expand the university’s teaching capacity.

He further laid the foundation stone of a new academic block to be built at a cost of ₹8.25 crore. The proposed structure will have five storeys, additional classrooms, academic spaces, and parking facilities to accommodate rising student strength.

Reviewing ongoing projects and academic initiatives at HPU, the Chief Minister said the state government is providing full support to strengthen the university, including an annual grant-in-aid of ₹150 crore. He said these efforts aim to improve infrastructure, promote digital transformation, and enhance academic excellence.

Recalling his association with the institution, he noted that he himself studied at HPU and said the university has undergone significant transformation over the years. He stressed the need to equip students with future-ready skills and knowledge to meet emerging challenges.

Highlighting the state’s push towards clean energy, the Chief Minister said Himachal Pradesh is actively promoting green initiatives, including the establishment of the state’s first Green Hydrogen Project at Nalagarh in Solan district. He urged HPU to actively engage in research related to green hydrogen, underlining its vast potential for the state’s future.

He also pointed out that Himachal Pradesh contributes ecological services worth nearly ₹90,000 crore to the nation. However, he expressed concern over the expected financial impact of ₹8,000–10,000 crore annually following the discontinuation of the Revenue Deficit Grant under the 16th Finance Commission recommendations. Despite this, he said the state remains committed to overcoming fiscal challenges through effective resource management and reform measures.

The Chief Minister added that the Computer-cum-CBT Lab will significantly benefit students of Shimla district by enabling them to take computer-based examinations locally under the H.P. Rajya Chayan Aayog, eliminating the need to travel to other districts. The facility will accommodate around 250 candidates at a time.
