The Himachal Pradesh Congress on Tuesday held a symbolic demonstration in Shimla over alleged discrepancies in the management of donations received for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu led the protest march, with party leaders and workers walking from the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex to the Ram Mandir at Ram Bazaar.
After the march, Sukhu, along with Cabinet colleagues and legislators, visited the temple, offered prayers and took part in a Havan ceremony.
Addressing party workers, the Chief Minister said the Ram Mandir represents the faith and emotions of millions of devotees who contributed towards its construction with devotion and personal capacity. He alleged that any misuse of such donations damages the trust placed by people in the religious institution.
Sukhu said he had also contributed to the temple construction campaign when approached by volunteers. He emphasized that the teachings of Lord Ram stand for service, truth and compassion, and that these values should guide public life rather than be used for political purposes.
Highlighting the state government’s approach towards the temple inauguration, Sukhu said Himachal Pradesh had declared a full-day holiday on the occasion, reflecting the deep respect and devotion people of the state hold for Lord Ram.
On the issue of donations, the Chief Minister said devotees had offered money and jewellery with immense faith, making accountability and transparency essential in handling such contributions. He added that matters involving religious sentiments require sincerity and integrity.
Sukhu further stated that devotion to Lord Ram should be reflected through adherence to his ideals. Referring to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, he mentioned the role of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and said the Congress believes in respecting all religions and preserving the values of Indian culture while opposing the use of religion for political purposes.
Later, the Chief Minister visited Jakhu Temple in Shimla, where he offered prayers and recited the Hanuman Chalisa.
