The Himachal Pradesh government has committed full support to scale up infrastructure and services at AIIMS Bilaspur, aiming to establish it as a premier regional healthcare hub. During a visit to the facility, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu held discussions with faculty members to review current operations and outline strategic improvements. The Chief Minister reaffirmed the state’s goal to elevate all government medical colleges to world-class standards by December this year, reducing the need for patients to seek advanced treatment outside the state.
To support this transformation, several key reforms are being undertaken across the health sector. To attract and retain top medical specialists, the state is offering enhanced salary packages and perks alongside revised, more accessible criteria for promoting doctors to professor roles. Additionally, diagnostic capabilities are being strengthened statewide with high-capacity 3-Tesla MRI machines operationalized at IGMC Shimla and AIMSS Chamiyana, alongside 1.5-Tesla MRI units being installed across eight regional and zonal hospitals.
Furthermore, the state government has set a target to increase postgraduate medical seats by 330 to boost the supply of specialized healthcare professionals. Expanding into advanced medical frontiers, Himachal Pradesh has also initiated projects in gene therapy and phototherapy, actively collaborating with medical experts in the United States to bring cutting-edge expertise to the state.
