In a comprehensive push to align state universities with modern market demands, Education Minister Rohit Thakur has called for a major shift toward future-ready, skill-based, and technology-driven higher education across Himachal Pradesh. Chairing the 9th meeting of the Himachal Pradesh State Higher Education Council (HPSHEC), the Minister directed educational institutions to continuously update their curricula and prepare students for the jobs, technologies, and career challenges of tomorrow.

A central pillar of this new directive is embedding Artificial Intelligence across diverse academic fields rather than restricting it to specialized computer science degrees. The vision encompasses AI applications tailored to Himachal’s unique economy, including precision agriculture and horticulture, digital tourism services, climate and disaster management, healthcare, law, and financial literacy. Alongside AI, colleges have been asked to introduce industry-aligned courses in high-demand fields like cybersecurity, robotics, renewable energy, drone technology, digital marketing, and sports science.

Beyond classroom learning, the plan places strong emphasis on localized Himalayan research and regional innovation. Educational institutions were urged to strengthen research infrastructure, expand grants, and build robust industry-academia linkages through joint research, internships, and campus placements. Research initiatives will focus primarily on critical regional challenges, such as climate change resilience, biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, and disaster mitigation across the Himalayan belt.

Addressing the broader aspirations and emotional well-being of the state’s youth, the Minister instructed colleges to bolster student support systems, career counseling, and mental health services. He stressed the importance of creating institutional platforms for open dialogue to channelize youth energy positively and provide holistic guidance. Reviewing the ongoing execution of NEP-2020, RUSA, and PM-USHA initiatives, the Minister reaffirmed the state’s commitment to maintaining its position as a frontrunner in modern, high-quality public education.
