Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, recently inaugurated state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. The new infrastructure includes a Centre for Advanced Bladder Diagnostics in the Department of Urology, alongside advanced PET-CT and SPECT-CT imaging systems in the Department of Nuclear Medicine. These additions significantly expand the hospital’s capacity to deliver high-end, affordable diagnostic care to over 5,600 patients every year.
The Centre for Advanced Bladder Diagnostics marks a major medical milestone by introducing India’s first integration of Video Urodynamics (VUDS) with Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) brain mapping. By measuring real-time changes in cerebral blood oxygen levels as the bladder fills and empties, this innovative technique allows clinicians to precisely identify whether complex urinary dysfunctions are rooted in neurological issues, localized bladder conditions, or a combination of both. Designed to handle roughly 5,000 patients annually, the unit provides crucial diagnostic support for complex urological conditions.
Complementing this unit, the new PET-CT and SPECT-CT scanners bolster the hospital’s capabilities across oncology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, and endocrinology. The PET-CT facility will prove essential for cancer detection, precise disease staging, therapeutic planning, and post-treatment monitoring, while the SPECT-CT unit enhances diagnostic evaluation for cardiac, renal, and orthopedic conditions. Expecting to serve between 600 and 700 patients annually, these nuclear medicine tools will deliver specialized diagnostic and therapeutic care at accessible rates, particularly benefiting economically disadvantaged patients and supporting postgraduate training.
During his visit, Nadda also inspected Safdarjung Hospital’s Heart Command Centre and Sports Injury Centre. While reviewing ongoing development initiatives, he commended the hospital for establishing a distinct reputation in public healthcare. He emphasized the necessity of conducting regular project reviews, performing periodic pipeline inspections, and setting realistic, achievable timelines to guarantee prompt completion of upcoming infrastructure upgrades.
