Governor Kavinder Gupta called for using literature and poetry as powerful mediums to promote social sensitivity, public awareness, service and patriotism, saying that creative expression can play an important role in strengthening the bond between individuals and society.

The Governor was speaking at a poetry meet titled ‘Sahitya Seva’, organised under Seva Pakhwada-2026 at Lok Bhavan. The event was jointly organised by Lok Bhavan and the Himachal Sahitya Evam Sanskriti Manch. Families of freedom fighters from across Himachal Pradesh were specially invited to the programme and honoured by the Governor.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Gupta said the event was not merely a poetry meet but an opportunity to connect literature with sensitivity, service and patriotism. He described literature as the voice of society’s collective conscience and said poetry goes beyond an arrangement of words to express human emotions, social consciousness and the aspirations of a nation.

He said meaningful poetry has the ability not only to touch the heart but also to inspire people to contribute to society and the nation. When poets highlight social concerns, celebrate nature, remember the valour of national heroes, inspire young people or draw attention to social challenges, their creative work also becomes a form of social service, he added.

Referring to the role of literature during India’s freedom movement, the Governor said writers and poets had contributed significantly to creating public awareness and strengthening national consciousness, self-respect and the spirit of freedom. He said the Indian literary tradition has long viewed literature not merely as entertainment but also as a means of public welfare, social awareness and national awakening.

Speaking about the sacrifices of freedom fighters, Governor Gupta said the India envisioned today was shaped by their courage, dedication and struggle. He noted that Himachal Pradesh also made an important contribution to the freedom movement, with several patriots participating in the struggle against British rule.

“We are honouring the families of freedom fighters today, but in reality, this is an honour to the memory and ideals of those great freedom fighters,” the Governor said. He added that their sacrifices serve as a reminder that nation-building rests not only on rights but also on duties, sacrifice and responsibility.

The Governor further said Seva Pakhwada provides an opportunity to make the spirit of service a part of everyday life. Service, he emphasised, is not the responsibility of any single institution or government but a collective responsibility of every citizen. Earlier, Governor Gupta also recited a poem, which was warmly appreciated by the gathering. Storyteller, novelist and poet S.R. Harnot welcomed the Governor and the distinguished guests. The poetry meet brought together literature, remembrance and civic values, providing a platform to reflect on the role of creative expression in promoting social consciousness and keeping alive the ideals of sacrifice, service and patriotism.
