In a major push to elevate ski mountaineering (Skimo) and prepare Indian athletes for the international podium, the Skimo India Federation organized a specialized technical workshop in Manali. The session saw active participation from renowned Spanish ski mountaineering coaches and experts, Alberto and Hector, who joined federation officials to chart an international-standard developmental roadmap.
Highlighting the region’s vast potential, the Spanish experts commended the natural terrain of the North Indian Himalayas, particularly Himachal Pradesh, stating that with structured technical training and upgraded infrastructure, the area could easily emerge as a global hub for the sport.
Skimo India Federation President Praveen Sood emphasized that the organization is working closely with the Ministry of Sports and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to expand the sport’s footprint. While ski mountaineering is relatively new to India, over 150 athletes are actively competing nationally, with an Indian athlete recently securing a impressive 7th place finish at the Asian Championship. Sood noted that the natural stamina of mountain youth, combined with technical expertise from international workshops, will pave the way for future medal prospects on the global stage.
