Meaning: To force an issue that has already ended.
Once upon a time a group of friends belonging to a very humble background joined together with the objective of changing their lives. They all belonged to very poor families and did not have enough resources to train themselves professionally for a dancing contest.
They all were very talented and often were seen performing in streets. Though initially they used to practice but people were impressed by their dancing moves and soon a mob used to gather around them. Sometimes even the police used to raid the place and drive the all friends away.
Time passed and with each passing day they all started to get better and better. Having no private place of their own, they continued to practice in the open. One day a man name Rob came to meet them and said, “I have often seen you people practicing out here and I really feel that you are good dancers. There is going to be an open competition at the local level where you all can participate and win a cash prize.”
All friends became excited and decided to participate. They named their group ‘HOPE’ and went for the audition. At first considering their appearance they were not given a warm welcome by the organizers but as soon as Rob stepped in and advocated their case they were given an opportunity to perform.
Everyone in the audition room was stunned with their performance and they were shortlisted for the finals.
HOPE members happiness knew no boundaries as they were all excited for the finals that was scheduled a month away. With time they all gained popularity in the local area and were invited to various functions by private parties.
They had name, fame and money now but with the approaching finals Rob suggested them not to mix business with pleasure. But HOPE members were not at all serious. They all over exerted themselves and finally the big day approached.
When their turn came they gave their best and were hopeful of winning the title. HOPE members raised objections on the results and the security dragged them out of the premises.
While they were about to leave the place they met Rob who informed them that the results was already pre-decided and they were BEATING A DEAD HORSE. It was too late to do or say anything on the issue even though no doubt they deserved the title.
They all even threatened to challenge the decision in court but soon understood that it was indeed the dead horse they were beating as they had already signed a contract saying they cannot challenge the decision once made by organizers.
