The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) marked Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas with a commemorative event honoring the legendary tribal leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda. Held in the Institute’s Seminar Room, the event united esteemed scholars, Fellows, Associates, and dignitaries to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of India’s tribal communities to the nation’s cultural and historical legacy.
Presiding over the event, Prof. R C Sinha, National Fellow at IIAS, highlighted Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and cultural preservation. The program’s centerpiece was a lecture by Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty, National Fellow at IIAS and former Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Odisha, titled “Beyond the Colonial Gaze: Vignettes of Tribal Writing Today.”
Prof. Mohanty’s lecture explored the richness of tribal literature and oral traditions, underscoring their critical role in challenging colonial narratives. He stressed the importance of preserving tribal heritage and adopting a holistic, inclusive approach to understanding tribal contributions to justice, equality, and sustainability.

Prof. Sinha urged the audience to recognize the sacrifices of tribal leaders like Bhagwan Birsa Munda in India’s freedom struggle. He emphasized the need to preserve tribal cultures and address socio-economic inequalities.
