Defying age and expectations, Tanish Sharma, a Class IX student of Auckland House School for Boys (AHSB), has emerged among India’s finest young investigative journalists, securing the 8th Best Journalist position in the finals of the 1st Invitational India Investigative Journalism Competition for Young Journalists. The competition was organised by the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ), New Delhi, in collaboration with the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN).
Competing against over 25,000 participants from across India—including professional journalists—Tanish impressed the judges with an investigative report on caste-based discrimination, a socially sensitive issue that required extensive fieldwork, interviews and meticulous fact-checking. The experience introduced him to the core principles of investigative journalism, where empathy, public trust and objectivity are as important as strong writing.
A native of Rohru in Shimla district, Tanish is also a self-published author of three books—The Trapped Soul, The Stupid and the Annoyed, and Everyday Facade, an essay collection inspired by society and everyday life. He has also performed at open-mic comedy events in Shimla, reflecting his flair for communication and public engagement.
Tanish credits veteran journalist Ravish Kumar as his greatest inspiration, while political analyst Yogendra Yadav has influenced his understanding of grassroots issues and public discourse.
Although he plans to study Law before preparing for the Civil Services, Tanish says journalism will remain a lifelong passion. He hopes to write regularly as a newspaper columnist on issues of public importance.
“A journalist’s responsibility is not to showcase his own knowledge but to simplify complex issues for ordinary people. When citizens understand issues clearly, they can make informed decisions, and that is how journalism contributes to a better society,” says Tanish.
For the young student, the honour is more than a personal milestone—it reinforces his belief that journalism is a powerful instrument of public service. With achievements in investigative reporting, literature and public speaking while still in school, Tanish is steadily establishing himself as one of Himachal Pradesh’s most promising young voices.
