AI Breakthrough in India: Microsoft and IndiaAI Lead the Way

IndiaAI, an Independent Business Division under the Digital India Corporation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to accelerate the adoption and development of artificial intelligence in India. This collaboration aims to advance AI innovation, skilling, and responsible practices, contributing to the goals of the India AI Mission.

Key highlights of the partnership

Microsoft and IndiaAI will work together on multiple initiatives to strengthen India’s AI ecosystem:

  • Skilling 500,000 individuals, including students, educators, developers, government officials, and women entrepreneurs, by 2026.
  • Establishing AI Catalysts, a network of Centers of Excellence, to promote rural AI innovation in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and engage 100,000 AI innovators through hackathons and community programs.
  • Setting up AI Productivity Labs in 20 National Skill Training Institutes and equipping 200 ITIs with foundational AI courses to empower 100,000 students and train 20,000 educators.
  • Supporting up to 1,000 AI startups with Azure credits, mentorship, and business resources through Microsoft’s Founders Hub.
  • Developing AI models with Indic language support to cater to India’s linguistic diversity.

Focus on responsible and inclusive AI

The partnership emphasizes the importance of ethical AI development. Efforts will include building a robust datasets platform, creating responsible AI frameworks, and setting up an AI Safety Institute in India. These initiatives aim to address citizen-scale challenges while fostering inclusivity and innovation.

Leaders’ statements

Shri Abhishek Singh, CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, stated that this collaboration aligns with the mission’s vision to address key challenges through skilling, innovation, and partnerships with industry and academia. He added that the partnership aims to position India as a global leader in AI by promoting ethical practices, empowering underserved communities, and driving economic growth.

Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India, expressed pride in collaborating with IndiaAI. He highlighted Microsoft’s commitment to democratizing AI access and empowering rural and underserved communities through this partnership.
