The rescue operation of stranded pilgrims in Bharmour, undertaken by the Chamba district administration, concluded successfully on Saturday as weather conditions improved. A total of 64 individuals were airlifted in four sorties by an Indian Air Force MI-17 helicopter from Bharmour to Chamba. All rescued pilgrims were later sent to their respective destinations via HRTC buses free of cost.

In addition to the rescued individuals, two mortal remains were also brought back during the operation. Over the past two days, a total of 588 people have been airlifted from Bharmour to Chamba, marking the end of a large-scale and coordinated effort amid challenging terrain and weather.

CM Sukhu praised the joint efforts of the district administration, NDRF, SDRF, Chamba Police, Home Guards, NGOs, and volunteers involved in the rescue mission. He commended the hospitality and compassion shown by the people of Chamba who organized langars (community kitchens) for the stranded pilgrims, embodying the spirit of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’.

The Chief Minister also appreciated Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, who led the operation on the ground. Minister Negi trekked on foot from Chamba to Bharmour to oversee the rescue efforts, ensuring the safety and well-being of each stranded pilgrim. The CM highlighted that this act reflects the state government’s humanitarian and people-first approach in times of crisis.
