In a major step towards educational reform, the Himachal Pradesh Government has announced that 100 Government Senior Secondary Schools will be affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from the next academic session. The initiative aims to raise academic standards, enhance competitiveness, and prepare students for national-level opportunities.
A government spokesperson stated that the CBSE affiliation will be implemented in a phased manner, with at least one school in every assembly constituency. This move ensures access to quality CBSE education at an affordable cost for students across the state.
The CBSE curriculum, being nationally benchmarked and aligned with competitive exams, is expected to boost students’ academic preparedness and open doors to higher education and professional careers. The spokesperson emphasized that the initiative would foster healthy competition between CBSE and HP Board schools, motivating both students and educators.
To support this reform, the government will establish a dedicated CBSE Sub-Cadre. Existing teachers will have the option to join, and recruitment of principals, teachers, and staff will be merit-based, considering academic performance, extracurricular involvement, and relevant experience.
A Performance-Based Incentive Scheme—both financial and non-financial—will be introduced to encourage excellence among educators. The government will also create additional posts where necessary to strengthen implementation.
These CBSE schools will operate as day-boarding institutions, focusing on the holistic development of students. In addition to academics, emphasis will be placed on nutrition, sports, arts, life skills, remedial learning, mental health counseling, mentoring, and career guidance.
Under the leadership of CM Sukhu, the government is committed to transforming these schools into model institutions for inclusive and future-ready education, not only within Himachal but also as examples for other states.
