In a significant boost to the agricultural sector of Himachal Pradesh, the Central Government has granted technical approval for two major medium irrigation projects worth ₹558 crore for Kangra district. Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri announced that these projects will benefit over 160 villages across the assembly constituencies of Jawali, Shahpur, Jwalamukhi, and Dehra, directly impacting thousands of farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity in traditionally rain-fed areas.
The first project, worth ₹219 crore, is the Sukhaahar Medium Irrigation Project, approved by the Technical Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Jal Shakti. It will cover 2,186 hectares of land in 45 villages of Jawali and Shahpur, benefiting approximately 24,120 rural residents. This region, which has long depended on rainfall for agriculture, will gain much-needed irrigation infrastructure to improve crop yield and resilience.
The second project, valued at ₹339 crore, will span parts of Jwalamukhi and Dehra constituencies and is set to provide assured irrigation to 116 villages. Once implemented, the initiative is expected to transform the region’s farming potential and offer a sustainable water solution for agricultural needs.
Deputy CM Agnihotri emphasized that these projects will not only improve irrigation coverage but also create employment opportunities for local youth, with preference to be given to skilled workers from the region. Technical training programs will be introduced to involve them in construction and maintenance activities. Additionally, the projects aim to conserve groundwater, enhance water-use efficiency, and encourage crop diversification, aligning with climate-resilient agricultural practices.
The Deputy Chief Minister assured that the financial sanction process is underway and will be expedited to ensure timely commencement of construction. He directed the concerned departments to implement the projects transparently and within a set timeframe. Reiterating the state government’s commitment to farmer welfare, he said that these efforts align with the vision of “Har Khet Ko Pani” and reflect the collaborative approach with the Central Government to secure the agricultural future of Himachal Pradesh.
