CM Sukhu announced that the Himachal Pradesh government will soon launch a large-scale anti-drug campaign to curb the rising menace of substance abuse in the state. Speaking at the 12th HP Police Half Marathon in Shimla, organized by the Police Department to raise awareness against drug abuse, the Chief Minister highlighted the urgency of the issue and detailed the state’s comprehensive plan to address it.
Expressing concern over the involvement of even government and police personnel in drug-related activities, the CM revealed that 80 government employees have already faced legal action. He said amendments to the Police Manual are under consideration to ensure stricter accountability, and a Special Task Force is being formed to intensify anti-drug operations. Recruitment of 500 new personnel in the Police Department is also underway to bolster enforcement efforts.
Mapping at the panchayat ward level is in progress to enable targeted intervention. The Chief Minister reaffirmed his government’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs, emphasizing a dual approach of strict law enforcement and rehabilitation. He stated that under the PIT-NDPS Act—implemented by the current administration—40 detention orders have been approved, with 36 issued this year alone. Properties of known drug peddlers have been demolished as part of the crackdown.
The CM also highlighted the recently passed HP Anti-Drugs Act, which distinguishes between drug offenders and users, focusing on rehabilitating victims and reintegrating them into society. He urged parents to talk openly with their children about the dangers of drug abuse and called on communities to actively support the upcoming campaign.
A special anti-drug awareness song titled Harmony of the Pines was also released during the event. Dignitaries present included MLA Harish Janartha, Mayor Surender Chauhan, DGP Ashok Tiwari, senior police officers, and other officials.
