Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday inaugurated a newly constructed multi-storey car parking facility near the Auckland Tunnel in Shimla, aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion in the city’s core area.
Built at a cost of ₹7.60 crore, the modern facility can accommodate up to 145 vehicles and is expected to significantly reduce roadside parking pressure around one of Shimla’s busiest stretches.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister said the project reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening urban infrastructure and ensuring planned development in the capital city. He emphasized that improving traffic management and expanding civic amenities remain key priorities of the government.
He noted that the rapid rise in vehicle numbers in Shimla has created serious challenges for parking and traffic regulation. “This facility has been developed to address these issues and provide convenience to both residents and tourists,” he said.
The government, he added, is undertaking multiple infrastructure initiatives to make Shimla more accessible, organized, and commuter-friendly, with a broader focus on sustainable urban development and improved public services.
Highlighting the importance of tourism in the region, Sukhu said the new parking facility would benefit the large number of visitors arriving in the city year-round while also improving mobility for locals.
He also appreciated the departments involved in completing the project, stating that its timely execution demonstrates the government’s efficiency in delivering development works.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the new parking complex will emerge as an important civic asset, helping ease traffic pressure in and around the Auckland Tunnel area.
