In a groundbreaking step to boost tourism and empower local communities in the high-altitude desert region of Spiti, CM Sukhu formally launched a state-of-the-art star gazing facility at Kaza, positioning Himachal Pradesh on the map for Astro-tourism. The initiative, spearheaded by the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology & Environment (HIMCOSTE) under the Department of Environment, Science Technology & Climate Change, aims to combine science, tourism, and local livelihood opportunities. During the launch, the Chief Minister handed over high-end computerized telescopes (Sky-Watcher BKDOB 8” Collapsible GOTO) to two local beneficiaries, while others joined virtually. These telescopes will be used to offer night sky observation experiences to tourists, making Spiti Valley a unique destination for stargazing enthusiasts.

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, CM Sukhu said that Astro-tourism not only opens new doors for tourism but also helps integrate science with culture. He noted that local homestay owners and youth from villages like Kaza, Langza, and Rangrik were actively coming forward to adopt this opportunity and would be provided with both equipment and training. Describing it as a first-of-its-kind effort in the region, he emphasized the value of Spiti’s pristine skies, minimal light pollution, and high-altitude clarity in attracting tourists. “This marks a new beginning for the state and will strengthen the local economy while creating scientific awareness,” he added.

The Chief Minister also underlined the need for collaborative efforts among tribal communities, scientific institutions, and government agencies to ensure long-term success. Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena stated that the concept of merging science and tourism in remote regions like Spiti was envisioned by CM Sukhu in August 2023. The programme is being coordinated by HIMCOSTE with support from the office of the ADC Spiti in Kaza. A tripartite MoU has also been signed between HIMCOSTE, the Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP), and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) to ensure scientific and technical guidance for the sustainability of the project.

The event saw the presence of MLA Anuradha Rana, Principal Advisor (Media) to the CM Naresh Chauhan, ADGPs Satwant Atwal and Abhishek Trivedi, Special Secretary D.C. Rana, and several senior officials.
