In a major step to strengthen the public healthcare system, CM Sukhu, along with Health Minister Dr. (Col.) Dhani Ram Shandil, flagged off 26 new Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances from his official residence, Oak Over, today. These ambulances are a significant addition to the existing fleet of 241 under the National Ambulance Service-108 (NSA).

These state-of-the-art ambulances are equipped with 19 life-saving medical devices such as transport ventilators, ECG machines, emergency ambu bags, oxygen cylinders, and blood pressure monitors. Medical technicians will be available 24×7 on board to provide critical care during emergencies. The ambulances will be deployed across government medical college hospitals, district and civil hospitals, and in remote areas of the state.

The Chief Minister said that this initiative is part of the state government’s continuous efforts to improve health infrastructure and provide timely emergency services. He emphasized that strengthening the health sector remains a key priority of the government.

On the same occasion, Chief Minister Sukhu also launched the Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign, a 60-day state-wide drive aimed at protecting the youth from the harmful effects of tobacco and other psychotropic substances. The campaign will run until 8th December 2025 and focus on awareness, prevention, and enforcement of existing tobacco control laws.

Highlighting the gravity of the issue, the Chief Minister noted that over 1.35 million people die every year in India due to tobacco-related illnesses like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and lung conditions. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to completely eliminating all forms of tobacco use, including e-cigarettes and hookah bars.

To ensure strict enforcement, flying squads and police teams will conduct regular checks. The government has issued clear directives for licensing of tobacco vendors, limiting shop numbers, and regulating tobacco sale in both urban and rural areas.

CM Sukhu also directed all Deputy Commissioners, departments, and local bodies to implement the campaign effectively, especially in educational institutions. Schools, colleges, and universities are required to comply with the “Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions Guidelines,” banning tobacco sales, use, and advertisements in and around campuses.

The government is offering free tobacco cessation services in all medical colleges and district hospitals. Furthermore, 109 Naye Disha centers are providing counseling and support for individuals seeking to quit tobacco use and lead healthier lives.

The Chief Minister administered an oath to all present, pledging to abstain from tobacco-related products and support the campaign.
