Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, addressing the annual function of Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Chaura Maidan, Shimla, emphasized the state government’s commitment to creating a self-reliant Himachal, despite facing numerous challenges. He stressed that resources should be distributed fairly across all sections of society, rather than being concentrated in the hands of a select few for political gain. The government is implementing several welfare reforms and is determined to continue making decisive progress in this direction.
The Chief Minister announced several key initiatives aimed at improving the state’s educational infrastructure. Starting next academic session, the government will introduce co-education in government senior secondary schools at the district headquarter level, aiming to bring about qualitative changes in the education system. In addition, Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools will be established across each Assembly constituency in phases, with ten schools set to open in the coming session. These institutions will be equipped with modern amenities such as swimming pools, indoor stadiums, and upgraded sports infrastructure.
He also highlighted the previous BJP government’s focus on opening 900 institutions in the final six months of its tenure for electoral purposes, without making proper budgetary provisions. In contrast, the current government is prioritizing quality education to prepare students for future challenges.
“Students from government educational institutions are second to none. I, too, studied in a government school and reached the position of Chief Minister. If I can do it, so can any student from a government school. This is why we are enhancing the facilities and making every effort to provide quality education,” said the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister further announced that educational institutions with low enrollment or poor standards would be closed starting next academic session. Students from these schools would be accommodated in nearby institutions with additional seats, and the government would cover their commuting expenses. He assured that within five years, the state’s education system would meet global standards, with no financial constraints to achieve this vision. A single Directorate overseeing education from nursery to higher secondary levels is also being set up to bring comprehensive reforms.
Additionally, the Chief Minister revealed plans to install a central heating system at Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Chaura Maidan, and introduce postgraduate courses in Economics, Political Science, and English from the next academic session. He also felicitated the meritorious students of the college.
