CM Sukhu has instructed the forest department to accelerate the construction of the Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park at Bankhandi in Dehra Sub Division, Kangra district, with a target to complete its first phase by December 2026.

During a review meeting held at his official residence, Oakover, Sukhu emphasized that the park is poised to become a world-class tourist destination. Encompassing 233 hectares, the facility will include lion and tiger safaris, enclosures for a variety of wildlife species, and visitor amenities such as three parking areas, food courts, and restaurants.

The Chief Minister directed immediate action on tenders for key infrastructure, including a hospital, administrative blocks, a quarantine zone, diagnostic facilities, and other utilities like toilet blocks and underground water tanks.

To boost its appeal and sustainability, CM Sukhu called for the integration of eco-tourism, a planetarium, and adventure activities like rock climbing and boating. He also urged the use of native plant species to improve the park’s ecological and aesthetic value.

Notably, the park is the first in India to receive Indian Green Building Council certification for its eco-friendly initiatives. A 1 MW solar power project will also be developed on-site to meet energy needs sustainably.

On the occasion, cheques worth Rs. 5 lakh each were presented towards the Aapda Rahat Kosh and Mukhyamantri Sukh Ashray Yojna by the Bio Conservation Society of the Great Himalayan National Park, Kullu. An additional Rs. 5.5 lakh each was contributed by the Bio Conservation Society, Khajjiar, handed over by Additional Chief Secretary K.K. Pant.

The meeting was attended by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden Amitabh Gautam, along with other senior officials.
