Shimla: Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Tuesday called for united, sustained and collective efforts to protect the youth from the growing menace of drug abuse in Himachal Pradesh. He was presiding over the closing ceremony of the Shimla Winter Carnival as the Chief Guest during the New Year cultural evening.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor urged every citizen to take a pledge not only to stay away from drugs themselves but also to actively discourage others from substance abuse. Extending his New Year 2026 greetings, he wished happiness, peace and prosperity to the people of the State. Lady Governor Janki Shukla was also present on the occasion.

The Governor said that the Shimla Winter Carnival has emerged as a vibrant reflection of Himachal Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty and warm hospitality. He appreciated the enthusiastic participation of local residents and tourists alike, adding that the impressive performances by artists made the third edition of the carnival a major attraction. He congratulated the Municipal Corporation Shimla and the organizing committee for successfully blending cultural celebration with social awareness, noting that the carnival has now become a strong cultural identity of Shimla and the State.

Emphasizing the broader responsibility associated with such large-scale festivities, Governor Shukla highlighted the need for environmental conservation and preservation of cultural heritage. He said that balanced tourism, protection of nature and traditions, and the promotion of positive thinking are essential for the State’s future. Stressing that awareness and collective resolve are the most effective tools, he called upon society to work together to build a healthy and drug-free Himachal Pradesh.

Earlier, Mayor of Shimla Municipal Corporation Surender Chauhan honoured the Governor and the Lady Governor. The Governor also presented awards to the winners of Voice of Shimla Season-3, awarding a first prize of ₹51,000 to Saurav Atri, a second prize of ₹31,000 to Poonam Pandit and a third prize of ₹21,000 to Subhash. He also released the souvenir of the Shimla Winter Carnival.

The evening concluded with vibrant cultural performances by noted comedian Ahsaan Qureshi and renowned Bollywood singer Hema Sardesai, which drew applause from the audience and added glamour to the closing समारोह.
