In a major step towards educational innovation, the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CU Punjab) is set to implement a new teaching-learning model titled the Student Co-Instructor Model from the current academic session. This initiative is part of the university’s continued efforts to promote a learner-centric ecosystem aligned with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Under the visionary leadership of Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor, and with the mentorship of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, this pioneering model redefines classroom roles by making students active participants in the teaching process.

In this approach, one student in each class will be assigned the role of a co-instructor on a rotational basis. The student will prepare a given topic and deliver a 20-minute presentation at the beginning of the class. The faculty member will then build upon the topic, adding depth and clarity. The session will conclude with a 20-minute open discussion, led by the student and finalized with inputs from the teacher.

This new pedagogy aims to:

  • Encourage active learning and critical thinking

  • Improve communication and leadership skills

  • Promote peer-to-peer learning and collaboration

  • Transform teachers into facilitators and mentors

Speaking about the initiative, Prof. Tiwari said, This model promotes inquisitiveness, creativity, and team spirit, while creating a classroom where learning is democratic and participatory.”

He added that the model also draws inspiration from traditional Indian educational values, such as peer learning and gurukul-style mentorship, while incorporating modern pedagogical practices.

To ensure smooth implementation, CU Punjab has directed all departments to adopt the model in a phased manner. Faculty and student orientation sessions will be held to support the transition.

Through this move, CU Punjab strengthens its commitment to academic excellence, student empowerment, and outcome-based education—setting a progressive example for higher education institutions across the country.
