Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, on Tuesday released a book titled “Yoga and Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes: An Integrated Approach to Wellness”, which suggests that Yoga-based interventions may reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes by nearly 40 per cent.
The release comes ahead of the International Day of Yoga on June 21 and focuses on promoting Yoga as an evidence-based preventive healthcare tool rather than only a traditional wellness practice.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Singh said India is uniquely positioned to integrate ancient knowledge systems like Yoga with modern scientific research, creating a strong model for preventive healthcare. He described evidence-based wellness as India’s contribution to global health systems.
He also referred to the theme of International Yoga Day 2026, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, noting that the goal is not just longer life expectancy but healthier, disease-free ageing.
The Minister highlighted findings from the Indian Prevention of Diabetes Study (IPDS), a long-term clinical trial involving around 1,000 participants, which found that a structured 40-minute Yoga regimen, combined with lifestyle measures, significantly reduced progression from prediabetes to Type 2 Diabetes.
Dr. Singh said the growing scientific validation of Yoga supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of integrating Yoga into mainstream healthcare as a preventive and holistic approach to well-being.
He added that the future of healthcare lies in prevention rather than treatment, and India can lead this shift by combining modern medicine with traditional, evidence-backed practices.
The book, edited by endocrinologist Dr. S. V. Madhu, compiles scientific evidence, physiological insights and practical guidance on Yoga-based interventions for diabetes prevention, and is expected to serve as a key reference for researchers, clinicians and public health professionals.
