Bishop Cotton School (BCS) in collaboration with Auckland House School, presented a spectacular musical performance of ‘Grease’, at Gothic Theatre, Gaiety, Shimla. This exciting event was a celebration of musical and acting talent in the picturesque city of Shimla.

The musical, famously portrayed in the film featuring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was performed in the Cottons premises as well as the stage had been specially constructed on the first floor for this grand occasion. The play was commendable, showcasing great production design and a compelling adaptation that effectively highlighted the key theme of the movie. The hard work put in by the children and the managements of both the schools was quite evident and deserve every bit of appreciation.

However, there were a few areas that could use improvement. The performance somewhat lacked in coordination, which occasionally affected the overall flow of the show. While the musical was known for its vibrant music, the drummer’s volume at times overshadowed the singers, making it challenging to fully appreciate their vocal talent. Additionally, the sound on stage was too soft, particularly for those seated at the back of the stage, which led to difficulties in hearing the dialogues. One notable area of concern overall was that a few characters required a strong emotional presence, as they appeared to lack expressiveness. The songs used as fillers could have been used from the original movie itself, it would have added additional charm to the musical.

In conclusion, ‘Grease’ at Bishop Cotton School was a commendable production with a focus on production design and theme adaptation. It was a memorable theatrical experience, and the effort put into the performance was evident. This joint collaboration has set a precedence which will definitely fuel others to create such amazing musical adaptations, thus creating visual treats for the people of Shimla City.
