The State of Himachal Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone in the healthcare sector as the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialties (AIMSS) in Chamiyana becomes the first government health institution in the state to successfully perform a high-end robotic surgery. The pioneering procedure was conducted on a resident of Khalini, Shimla, who was undergoing treatment for a prostate-related condition.
The landmark surgery was carried out by a skilled team of doctors including Dr. Anant Kumar, Dr. Pamposh Raina, and Dr. Pawan Kaundal. According to the team, the robotic surgery took around three hours to complete, whereas a conventional surgery would have taken at least five hours. The procedure resulted in no blood loss, in stark contrast to the estimated four units typically needed in traditional methods. The patient is expected to be discharged within 3–4 days, significantly sooner than the usual 8–10 days required after standard surgery.
CM Sukhu congratulated the entire medical team for their historic achievement, calling it a proud moment for the state. He emphasized that the successful implementation of robotic surgery in a government hospital represents a major step forward in making advanced healthcare accessible and affordable to the people of Himachal Pradesh.
The patient’s attendant also expressed deep gratitude to the Chief Minister and the State Government for introducing this cutting-edge medical technology in the public health system. He remarked that with this advancement, patients would no longer need to travel outside the state for such sophisticated treatment options.
Dr. Kailash Bharwal, consultant in the Urology department at AIMSS, stated that this event marks the beginning of a new era in the state’s medical history. He highlighted the many benefits of robotic surgery, including minimal blood loss, improved precision, and faster recovery times. According to him, patients can return to their normal routines much sooner after undergoing robotic procedures.
Robotic surgery involves the use of highly advanced robotic arms that eliminate natural hand tremors and allow surgeons to make extremely precise and steady movements. This technology is especially beneficial in operations near delicate structures like nerves and blood vessels. Additionally, it requires smaller incisions, which generally means less scarring, reduced pain, and better overall outcomes.
The successful execution of the first robotic surgery at AIMSS Chamiyana is a testament to the state government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and providing world-class treatment options within Himachal Pradesh.
