Governor Flags Off Anti-Drug Rally in Hamirpur to Combat Rising Drug Abuse

Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla emphasized the pivotal role of youth in breaking the drug supply chain, stating that “our commitment is the real cure for addiction”. Addressing an anti-drug awareness program at Gautam Group of Colleges organized in collaboration with Himachal Pradesh Technical University at Gauda in Hamirpur, today, the Governor highlighted the urgency of collective efforts against drug abuse.

Flagging off a massive anti-drug rally comprising hundreds of students from various educational institutions, the Governor remarked: “If drugs infiltrate the land of warriors, there will be no soldiers, if they reach educational institutions, we will lose future doctors and engineers.”

He revealed that upon his first meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after assuming the office, the PM expressed concern over the rising drug problem in Himachal. Inspired by this, we launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Himachal – Swasth Himachal’ campaign, urging society to participate actively.

Highlighting the significant role of Panchayati Raj institutions and women in combating this menace, he said: “If women decide, the fight against drugs will surely succeed.” The Governor also acknowledged the crucial support of the media in amplifying the campaign’s reach.

Superintendent of Police, Hamirpur, Bhagat Singh briefed about the district’s dedicated initiative ‘Hamirpur War Against Drugs’, involving schools, colleges, and local communities. Experts, including O.P. Sharma, Dr. Rajeet, psychiatrists and educationists, spoke about the psychological and societal impacts of drug abuse and the need for preventive strategies, counselling and rehabilitation.

Prof. Shashi Dhiman welcomed the governor on the occasion. Earlier, the Governor visited the Ayushman De-addiction Center in Gauda, interacting with patients and reviewed the facilities. Students presented impactful skits to raise awareness, and the Governor honored Ayushman Kumar, the center’s director, for his contributions.

The rally, marching under slogans like ‘Drive Away Drugs, Save Himachal’, served as a powerful testament to the growing youth-led movement against substance abuse in the state. Governor’s Secretary C.P Verma, DC Hamirpur Amarjeet Singh and other prominent people were also present on the occasion.
