In a compassionate gesture, Governor Shukla today visited the disaster-hit areas of Thunag, Bagsaid, and Janjehli in the Siraj Assembly Constituency of Mandi district to assess the damage caused by recent natural calamities and to personally oversee relief efforts.

During his visit, the Governor interacted with affected families, distributed essential relief supplies, and expressed solidarity with the people who suffered immense losses to property, livestock, and livelihood. He noted that Thunag subdivision had been among the worst affected, with preliminary compensation cases worth over ₹3 crore already approved for final sanction.

“The courage and resilience displayed by the residents here, despite their losses, is truly inspiring,” the Governor said, adding that although full compensation may not be possible, every effort is being made to ensure timely and adequate support.

Governor Shukla inspected the relief camp at Bagsaid, held meetings with disaster-hit families at the PWD Rest House in Thunag, and reviewed on-ground conditions in the Jhundi and Pakhred panchayats. He later traveled to Janjehli, offering both comfort and assurance to distressed families.

He confirmed that five truckloads of relief material had already been dispatched to Mandi and another to Kullu from Raj Bhavan, with additional supplies ready to be sent upon request from the district administration.

Calling the calamity a major disaster, the Governor emphasized the urgent need for both restoration and long-term disaster preparedness. He also referenced the Supreme Court’s recent observations on environmental protection, urging collective and serious action to prevent such tragedies in the future.

A central assessment team has been deployed by the Government of India to study the causes and evaluate the extent of the disaster, which will aid in strategic planning and future mitigation.

Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, who accompanied the Governor, said the region remains in distress, with many still in temporary shelters. He commended the district administration and the state government for restoring key services like roads, electricity, and water. He also thanked the Governor and the Red Cross for their timely support.

Residents shared their grievances, stories of loss, and immediate needs with the Governor, who assured them that Raj Bhavan remains committed to supporting ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Also present during the visit were Secretary to the Governor C.P. Verma, Mandi DC Apoorv Devgan, ASP Sachin Hiremath, and other senior officials.
