Green India Mission: Enhancing Forest Cover And Combating Climate Change

National Mission for a Green India (GIM) is one of the eight Missions outlined under the National Action Plan on Climate Change. It aims at protecting, restoring, and enhancing India’s forest cover and responding to Climate Change by undertaking plantation activities in the forest and non-forest areas in the selected landscapes.

GIM activities were started in the FY 2015-16 and so far, seventeen States namely Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and one union territory of Jammu & Kashmir has been taken up under Green India Mission.

The Ministry has released Rs 16.32 Crore as central share during the FY 2019-20 to carry out the activities as per approved Annual Plan of Operation for FY 2019-20 to the State of Kerala. This fund has been fully utilized by the State till financial year 2023-24. The State-wise funds allocated/disbursed/released and utilized under GIM from 2019-20 to 2022-23 is detailed in Annexure.

The fund utilized also include the utilization of unspent funds available with the States from release of previous years. This information was given by Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ashwini Kumar Choubey in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
