CM Sukhu has urged PM Modi to grant Himachal Pradesh 12% free power from all Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) hydroelectric projects. In a formal letter, the CM highlighted that while state-approved hydro projects already contribute free power, BBMB projects—despite utilizing Himachal’s resources—offer none. Calling it a “historic injustice,” Sukhu appealed for corrective action through the Prime Minister’s intervention.
In a separate communication to Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, the CM requested an additional 1% free power from the Nathpa Jhakri Power Project (beyond the existing allocation) for the Local Area Development Fund. He cited the precedent set by the Rampur Power Project to support his case, emphasizing the need to aid families impacted by the project.
Sukhu also reiterated the long-standing demand for Himachal’s rightful representation in BBMB by appointing a whole-time member from the state—an issue that has seen repeated but unmet appeals.
Additionally, the CM reached out to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, urging the state to provide a written commitment regarding energy arrears owed to Himachal Pradesh. These arrears—amounting to 13,066 million units from November 1966 to October 2011—are to be settled over 15 years at a rate of 871 million units per year, along with 6% interest. Sukhu noted that resolving the issue would enable both states to advance on shared hydropower initiatives.
